Sarapul is a city with eventful
cultural, merchant and industrial history. It was
known as a countryside Voznesenskoye since the
middle of the XVI th century. The rank of the city
was conferred in 1780. Nowadays Sarapul is one of
the largest cities of Russia; it is the second city
of the Udmurt Republic (the first one is Izhevsk)
according to its economical status and population.
Sarapul's economy is defined by the numbers of
aspects: large enterprises of engineering and radio
- electronic industry; wide network of finance and
credit organizations; developed sphere of education
(including secondary and higher education);
beneficial geographical location with the developed
transport network of all kinds: railroad station (Gorkovskaya
railway system); river port etc.
The city has preserved over 100
architectural monuments and ensembles. The citizens
and visitors pay high tribute to various cultural
pleasure resorts, crystal nature and the atmosphere
of the quiet ancient city.
